Don’t let love interfere with your appetite. It never does with mine. ~ Anthony Trollope
“Everything is popular here.”
That’s what the server at Slightly Toasted Cafe answered when I asked which of their hot sandwiches people liked most. It was my first time there and I wanted something super to go with the soup I’d just ordered.
So I told her, “Philly cheesesteak,” knowing I might be setting myself up for disappointment since Las Cruces is no where near Philadelphia.
But the server oozed confidence in the product and I hadn’t eaten a Philly cheesesteak in years so I let the order stand. And she left me and my friend to talk.
Slightly Toasted’s atmosphere is great for talking. The decor is colorful and adult-cozy, even though the restaurant is located across the street from across the street from a high school.
The spicy tortilla soup arrived first. Tortillas over chicken over cilantro and chiles ~ some of my favorite things together ~ in a bowl.
Did it taste as good as it looked?
My friend, who had suggested it, watched for my reaction as I took the first spoonful. Then the second. By the third time, I was smitten.
The green chile pork soup at Mountain View Market Kitchen tastes spicy-fresh-good. And Bravo’s Cafe menudo is delicious fuel helping me stay warm this winter. But, the combination of flavors in Slightly Toasted’s spicy tortilla soup have made it my current restaurant favorite.
Then came the Philly cheesesteak with fries.
The sandwich was . . . good, the fries were great, I ate each crispy one.
I’ll return to Slightly Toasted Cafe to try more of the many tasty-sounding sandwiches on the menu ~ I’ve only scratched the surface.
And there is always the soup.
What’s your favorite wintertime soup and where do you get it?
